The UN Security Council is holding a special session to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, where the UN envoy to Afghanistan Deborah Lyons called on the international community to prevent the country from sliding into a "serious catastrophe", and Afghanistan's representative to the United Nations, Ghulam Kazizai, called on the Security Council to prevent the catastrophe and force the Taliban to end violence .

During the session held today, Friday, UN Envoy Lyons said that the situation in the country is "now going through a dangerous transition phase", and called on the international community to "prevent Afghanistan's slide into a dangerous catastrophe."

Deborah Lyons added that "the situation in Afghanistan is very similar to what happened in Syria (referring to the war that erupted since 2011 after the regime confronted its opponents who demanded its overthrow) and Sarajevo (referring to the brutal war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990s). .

The UN official said that "the catastrophe in Afghanistan will have consequences beyond the borders of the country," considering that "the Taliban's bombing has killed the largest number of civilians in the past period," and accused the movement of "trying to control the regional centers in the country by force of arms."

It confirmed that the attack that targeted Kandahar since July 9 has killed 460 civilians, and that 104 civilians have been killed and 403 others have been injured since the 28th of the same month.

"Attacks targeting cities in Afghanistan must stop immediately, we fear that the number of refugees and migrants will multiply and more victims will fall as a result of the conflict there," she said.

In turn, Afghanistan's representative to the United Nations, Ghulam Kazizai, said that the situation in the country has deteriorated significantly due to the attacks launched by the Taliban, accusing the movement of repudiating the agreements reached in the Doha negotiations.

The representative of Afghanistan added during the session that the current Taliban attack is unprecedented in 30 years of conflict, and that the movement has become more violent and treats civilians with more extremism.

He said that the fall of 10 border crossings in the hands of the Taliban led to the suspension of trade and the rise in prices, and accused the movement of fighting for power, which turned the country into a haven for terrorism.

The Afghan official urged Pakistan to help remove Taliban sanctuaries and supply lines, and establish a joint monitoring and counter-terrorism mechanism.

He considered that the Security Council must act and prevent a catastrophe in the country, and force the Taliban to end the violence in the country.
