According to the law, an electric scooter may have a continuous rated power of a maximum of 250 watts.

If it is taller, it is a moped, which means a completely different set of rules, such as compulsory helmets, driving licenses and sobriety.

But how the continuous rated power is measured is unclear.

Want to get a consensus

Car inspector Patrick Zetterberg believes that many electric scooters cannot be counted as bicycles because they have a higher engine power.

The traffic unit at the police in Eskilstuna has now contacted the police's legal department and development center to obtain a national consensus on the issue.

One of the companies that rents out electric scooters in Eskilstuna, Tier, has a marking on its motors that states 350 watts.

But they write in an email to SVT that they have throttled the wattage effect in the engine so that it follows Swedish law.

Proposal to amend the law

However, the law may soon change.

The Swedish Transport Agency has submitted a proposal for several changes to the law regarding electric scooters.

One of them is to remove the limit at 250 watts.

A change that Patrick Zetterberg does not want to see.

- It's right up the walls. Then you make a difference between an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. It's like letting a child without a driving license ride a motorcycle that only goes at 20 kilometers per hour, that would be crazy, he says.
