06 August 2021 Pro-Iranian Lebanese Hezbollah claimed rocket fire from Lebanon towards Shebaa Farms, disputed between Syria, Lebanon and Israel, in the eastern sector of the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel. This was reported in a statement by the Lebanese Shiite movement itself, according to which it is "10 rockets" Katyuscia of 122 mm caliber. The claim states that this is a "response to Israeli air strikes on Thursday night", which in turn were carried out after several rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory from May to early August.

Israel's response

Also on the blue line that divides the two countries in the disputed region of the Shebaa farms there have been repeated artillery shots fired by Israel. This was reported by the Lebanese government agency Nnna, according to which the mortar rounds, with a caliber of 155 millimeters, hit the area of the hills of Kfar Shuba and Habbariya, in the district of Hrqub. The shots, the Lebanese media always say, hit open areas.

Israel: "We don't want conflict"

The Israeli military spokesman in a meeting with local media said that "we have no interest in going towards a conflict, but at the same time - he added - we will not allow the Northern border to be transformed into a confrontation zone". Hezbollah fired "19 rockets", 3 of which fell into Lebanese territory and 10 were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system. The spokesman found it significant that Hezbollah fire was directed into open areas. He also confirmed that the rocket launches two days ago from southern Lebanon are attributable to Palestinian elements, which were not coordinated with Hezbollah. At the moment, he continued, Israel has fired dozens of artillery rounds towards the area from where it started today's attack.

Emergency meeting in Israel

In this context of high tension, the Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, together with the Minister of Defense, Benny Gantz, called an emergency meeting of the top security. According to reports from the website of the Haaretz newspaper, the meeting will also be attended by the chief of staff of the army, Aviv Kohavi and other senior defense officials. On the agenda, the assessment of Israel's possible actions following the attack claimed by Hezbollah.

Unifil's appeal

"This is a very serious situation and we invite all parties to cease fire": this is what we read on the Twitter account of the UN mission in Lebanon Unifil, after the launch of rockets by the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah in Northern Israel and the Israeli response with artillery fire.

Again we have seen rockets launched from north of @UNIFIL_ Area Ops towards Israel and return fire.

During my interaction with officials in both countries (@LebarmyOfficial @IDF) over the past hours, I have urged maximum restraint.

The escalation of the past two days must stop.
