"The leadership of Abkhazia and the Ministry of Health managed to agree with the Russian Federation on the purchase of five thousand doses of the Sputnik Light vaccine, which was delivered to the republic on August 6," the official statement says.
The department noted that the negotiations with Russia on the supply of Russian vaccines were conducted personally by the president of the republic, Aslan Bzhania.
In June, the Abkhaz authorities turned to Russia for help in the fight against coronavirus infection.
According to the head of the Ministry of Health of the republic, Eduard Butba, the incidence of COVID-19 is growing in the region.
The total number of detected cases of coronavirus infection in Abkhazia today is 22,888. 18,205 people recovered, 326 died.
