The prefect of Haute-Corse has announced new restrictive measures to deal with the epidemic outbreak on the island.

Coronavirus contaminations are increasing, the incidence rate is more than four times higher than the national average.

Any gathering of more than 10 people on the public highway is now prohibited in the department.

Village festivals, fairs and balls are prohibited in Haute-Corse, where the incidence rate of Covid-19 is more than four times higher than the national average and particularly high among young people, announced the prefect on Wednesday. "Faced with the continuing deterioration of the health situation in Haute-Corse", any gathering of more than ten people on the public highway is prohibited in the department, frequented by tens of thousands of tourists in summer.

In Haute-Corse, the incidence rate of Covid-19 is 836 per 100,000 inhabitants, more than "four times the national incidence rate", explained the prefect of Haute-Corse, François Ravier during a press conference. He said that the incidence rate climbed to "1,887 among young people aged 15 to 19" and to "1,709 among those aged 20 to 39" while continuing to increase in "the most fragile people, the most aged. 65 years "with a rate of 264. The prefect also made a point of specifying that Corsican residents represented" 80% of contaminations ". "This proves that entry controls in Corsica work because the share of contaminated tourists is very small, around 20%," he added.

Wearing a mask compulsory in musical evenings outside

These new measures aim to "limit intergenerational mixing", assured the prefect, also announcing the end of activities in hotels, cafes and restaurants at 1 am (and not in nightclubs), the wearing of the compulsory mask and a distance of two meters between each row of religious processions, very popular in Corsica.

Wearing a mask is also compulsory for minors in musical and dancing evenings outdoors, as well as the obligation to be accompanied by an adult.

All events welcoming more than 50 people in establishments open to the public must be declared to the prefecture "72 hours before".

The wearing of the mask in dense spaces in the main towns of Haute-Corse (Bastia, Corte, Calvi, Ile Rousse, Calenzana and St Florent) is extended to a few towns including Ghisonaccia.

In total, 235 people have died on this island of 340,000 inhabitants since the start of the epidemic and 65 people are hospitalized, according to the latest report from the Regional Health Agency published on Tuesday, which on Tuesday triggered the "white plan" allowing hospitals to increase their capacity.
