The New York Times recently passed the 8 million subscriber mark to its site and print edition and hopes to have more than 8.5 million subscribers by the end of the year, according to a statement released Wednesday.

The goal is to attract as many new subscribers as in 2019, or around one million, said CEO Meredith Kopit Levien.

However, the American daily does not plan to renew its performance in 2020, when the number of paying customers jumped by two million thanks to particularly rich news, between the start of the pandemic and the presidential election campaign between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

Ten years after the launch of its digital paid offer, around 89% of subscribers are only to online products.

The new digital subscriptions recorded in the second quarter were shared between the news site (77,000 new subscriptions) and cooking, games and audio products applications (65,000).

On the financial side, the group doubled its net profit over the period, to $ 54 million, while its turnover increased by 23% to reach $ 498 million.

Subscription revenue rose 16% to 339 million and advertising revenue jumped 66% from the same period last year, when the economy was sluggish due to pandemic restrictions , to $ 113 million.

The daily action jumped 12% in the first trading of the session on Wall Street.
