A year ago, more than 200 Lebanese were found dead after a violent explosion in the port of Beirut.

Since then, the country has been going through an unprecedented political crisis and no longer has a government.

For the Lebanese political scientist, Antoine Basbous, it is the Islamist party Hezbollag which, in fact, has taken power.

He alerted Wednesday in the show Europe Soir, on the situation in the country.

INTERVIEW

One year to the day after the explosion killing more than 200 people in the port of Beirut, Lebanon is going through one of the greatest political and economic crises in its history.

On Wednesday, an international videoconference, co-chaired by Emmanuel Macron, was organized to provide a humanitarian response to what the country is going through.

But for the Lebanese political scientist, Antoine Basbous, this is not enough.

This specialist in the Arab world and Islam was the guest of Europe 1 on Wednesday evening.

Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced aid of 100 million euros in Lebanon to help the country emerge from the economic and political crisis in which it is mired.

But, according to Lebanese political scientist Antoine Basbous, "the problem is elsewhere".

"This country is colonized by Iran through Hezbollah. The political party has selected leaders who are telegraphists at home. All this is to dilute and disintegrate the Lebanese identity and replace it," says this specialist. of the Arab world and of Islam.

Hezbollah has controlled "all powers" for a year

Since the disaster a year ago, there is no more government in Lebanon.

And for the political scientist, this benefits the Islamist religious party, Hezbollah.

The presidency of the Republic, of the Assembly or even the head of government, this party now controls "all powers", alarmed Antoine Basbous.

However, since the "National Pact" of 1943, Lebanon has been organized according to a confessionalist system: Maronite Christians, Shiite Muslims and Sunnis must share the highest positions of the State.

To "save" Lebanon, Antoine Basbous sees only one solution: "an international mandate to remove it from this Iranian tutelage". Hezbollah is also responsible, according to him, for the explosion of the port of Beirut a year earlier. "These 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate, who sent them? Who protected them? Who allowed Assad to come and take these barrels of explosives and throw them on his people? It's Hezbollah. And who is preventing today the investigation to progress? It is obviously the Hezbollah, proclaims the political scientist.
