Australians Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan became Olympic 470 dinghy sailing champions on Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics after winning silver in 2016 in Rio.

In a moderate wind of around ten knots, the Australian duo, who won the final regatta, beat the Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergströem, silver medalists, and the Spaniards Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez Garcia-Paz in bronze.

Belcher, 38, won his second Olympic title after his coronation in London in 2012 with another partner, Malcolm Page.

The French crew of Kévin Peponnet and Jérémie Mion had failed to qualify for the medal race reserved for the top ten, finishing in 11th place in the qualifying phase.
