• Wide Angle The Via Crucis of Sephardic Jews to obtain a Spanish passport

The PP has questioned the Government for the increase in denials of requests for Spanish nationality of the

descendants of Sephardic Jews

expelled by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 and for its possible impact on bilateral relations between Spain and the United States, which has been collected in recent days by EL MUNDO and the 'New York Times'.

The interpellation, presented by deputies

Valentina Martínez

, from A Coruña, and

Pablo Hispán

, from Granada, consists of two questions. The first is the reason for the increase in refusals to grant Spanish nationality to people who claim to be descendants of Jews expelled in the 15th century, and the second asks the Ministry of Justice if there has been any change in the criteria for the granting of nationality.

In the last two years, the granting of Spanish nationality to Sephardim and descendants of Sephardim has increased dramatically, but at the same time, denials of petitions have also skyrocketed. If until December 31, the chances of nationality being denied were

just 0.048%

, so far in 2021 they reach no less than

22%

.

According to some Sephardic leaders, the Ministry of Justice has changed the criteria for accessing Spanish nationality, which are

set in a June 2015 law

approved unanimously in the Congress of Deputies.

These same sources affirm that the nationality has been withdrawn from some one hundred people who had received it, an unprecedented event in the recent history of Spain.

The controversy has reached Washington, where New Mexico Democratic Congresswoman

Teresa Leger Fernandez

has questioned the White House and the State Department on this matter.

The Justice Ministry denies any change in the interpretation of the law, and maintains that a stricter process is simply being followed in the delivery of passports after Spanish security forces detected cases of possible fraud.

Likewise, it categorically rejects that anyone's nationality has been withdrawn.
