The sudden acceleration in the number of Covid-19 contaminations in recent days in Guadeloupe is forcing local authorities to reinstate containment, which will come into force on Wednesday from 8 p.m.

Gyms, stadiums, swimming pools and restaurants will notably be forced to close.

After Martinique, it's Guadeloupe's turn! The island is reconfigured for at least three weeks, starting Wednesday evening 8 p.m. The authorities made their decision late Monday. Containment appears to be the only solution to cope with the massive increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the archipelago. Never has such a level of incidence of the virus been reached, with 828 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is almost four times more than the national average. Three weeks ago, there were ten times fewer cases of Covid-19.

"Three weeks ago, we were at 300 cases detected per week, last week at 1,000 and there we are at 3,100 cases, with an acceleration in the last days which brings us straight into a wall", alerts Alexandre Rochatte, the prefect of Guadeloupe.

"If we keep the same slope, we will be at 6,000 cases next week. Can you imagine what that represents for a territory like Guadeloupe?"

None of the 22 patients currently in intensive care were vaccinated, local authorities added.

There, only 16% of the population received both doses, which is not enough to curb the circulation of the virus.

Travel limited to 10 km

The curfew is therefore brought forward to 8 p.m.

During the day, driving within a radius of 10 km will be subject to restrictions.

Beyond that, it will be necessary to bring out the certificate to justify a compelling reason.

Settling on the beach will be prohibited.

Gyms, stadiums and swimming pools will close.
