At least six nationals of African countries were injured on Monday, August 2, during a fight with the police in Bangalore, in southern India, after the death of a Congolese student in detention.

Joel Malu, 27, from Congo, was arrested by police on Sunday for possession of a small amount of ecstasy pills, an illegal drug, and died in police custody Monday morning from cardiac arrest, added this manager.

The student had previously been diagnosed with bradycardia, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to the same source.

After his death, several nationals of African countries staged a demonstration in front of the police station and clashed with police officers.

A dozen arrests

Protesters refuted police claims Joel Malu died of cardiac arrest and accused her of wrongly detaining him.

Police used batons to repel protesters and arrested a dozen.

Police added that they have opened an investigation into the death, while the student was living illegally in India after his passport and visa expired in 2017.

Nationals of African countries often accuse the Indian police of harassment and racism.

Many say they are regularly detained on false drug trafficking charges and are discriminated against on a daily basis.
