As the Delta variant continues to spread, pressure is mounting on French hospitals.

The number of Covid-19 hospitalized patients continued to increase, Sunday, August 1, with 7,581 patients in hospital, including 312 new hospitalizations in 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health France.

The number of Covid patients at the hospital was 7,409 on Saturday and 6,843 last Sunday.

Critical care services, which receive the most seriously ill patients, are also seeing an increase in severe forms.

They had 1,137 patients on Sunday (including 69 admissions in 24 hours), against 1,099 Saturday and 886 a week ago.

This indicator fell below the 1,000 threshold on July 7, before starting to slowly rise.

Some 19,600 new cases of contamination were also recorded on Sunday, against 23,471 on Saturday and 16,167 last Sunday.

The positivity rate remains stable at 4.3%.

"Very strong territorial disparities"

In an interview with Ouest-France published this weekend, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran describes the situation as "very fragile and uncertain".

"We do not know how the Delta variant will behave during the summer, at home as with our neighbors. And we observe very strong territorial disparities, in France, concerning the incidence rates and the evolution of the virus. Many departments are on the steep slope, ”he added.

The disease has claimed 18 new deaths in 24 hours in hospital, bringing the total deaths to 111,916 since the start of the pandemic, including 85,402 in hospital.

Regarding vaccination, 42,592,047 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 63.2% of the total population) since the start of the campaign in France and 35,472,139 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 52.6% of the total population).
