Sudan.. River Nile level rises, and Khartoum awaits flooding

A few days after Ethiopia completed the second phase of filling the reservoir of the Renaissance Dam, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, recorded a rise in the water level of the Nile River, which reached stages that threaten the risk of flooding, which prompted the authorities in the country to ask citizens to take the necessary precautions.

Today, Sunday, Sudan revealed a very large increase in water revenues in the Blue Nile, as its level at Al-Dim station on the Sudanese-Ethiopian border reached 573 million cubic metres.

Sudan said, in a statement published by the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), that the revenues of the Blue Nile are expected to reach about 600 million cubic meters during the next three days.

He pointed out that the revenues of the Atbara River at the Sudanese-Ethiopian border also amounted to 385 million cubic meters.

The average discharges behind the Sudanese dams were as follows: the Roseires Dam 586 million cubic metres, the Sennar Dam 548 million cubic metres, the Jabal Al-Awliya Dam 78 million cubic metres, the Khashm El Girba Dam 358 million cubic metres, and the Merowe Dam 560 million cubic metres.

Khartoum also recorded a rise in the water level in the Nile, which reached 16.04 meters, leaving the Khartoum in front of less than half a meter until it reached the flood limit, which is set at a level of 16.50 meters.

Sudan called on citizens in all sectors to take the necessary precautions, in the event that the water level reaches the point of flooding.

Yesterday, Saturday, the Sudanese state of Sennar declared a state of maximum alert, after the levels of the Blue Nile rose in most of the prisons in the state.

The Sudan News Agency quoted the governor of Sennar state, Muhammad Suleiman, as saying that his government and its security committee will remain in permanent session in anticipation of any emergency after the rise in the water levels of the Blue Nile.

The governor of Sennar state appealed to the citizens living on the Blue Nile to be careful, after information was received that the levels of the Blue Nile would rise, in addition to heavy rains on the high Ethiopian plateau, in anticipation of any flood.
