The course of the disease with the strain "delta"

Deputy Director for Research of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Gorelov spoke about the course of the disease in case of infection with the "delta" strain, also known as the Indian strain.

The scientist noted that the incubation period for those infected with the "delta" variant of coronavirus is shorter.

“And, unfortunately, we see that the course of the disease is much more severe: moderate and severe prevail in patients, and asymptomatic and asymptomatic forms are less often recorded.

The treatment of such patients, of course, is both more complicated and longer, ”Gorelova TASS quotes.

According to the expert, based on statistics, the treatment of such patients takes longer than those infected with earlier strains.

“That is why I do not get tired of repeating that only mass vaccination of the population will not only help us to interrupt the chain of infections, but also prevent the emergence of new, even more dangerous variants of infection,” Gorelov concluded.

At the same time, experts believe that different levels of antibodies are required to form protection against different strains.

This, in particular, was stated by the infectious disease doctor, candidate of medical sciences Ekaterina Stepanova.

“For example, a South African strain requires a level of more than 1000 BAU / ml.

It is assumed that for the delta strain, this level will be even higher - 1.5 thousand BAU / ml, ”she said in an interview with TASS.

Stepanova noted that serological diagnostics is not 100% accurate, and it is not worth focusing on it in terms of vaccination.

“There are always cross-reactions, and quite often it is the class M immunoglobulins that are false positive.

Therefore, I urge you not to focus on these antibodies.

And if you have not yet been vaccinated, then it is better not to donate antibodies, but to vaccinate regardless of whether you are sick or not, ”she concluded.
