Qatari weightlifter Faris Ibrahim achieved a historic achievement by winning the first gold medal for Qatar in the history of its participation in the Olympic Games, and also set a new Olympic record.

Ibrahim, 23, won the gold medal in weightlifting in the 96-kilogram category on Saturday.

Ibrahim set an Olympic record, lifting 177 kilograms in the snatch competitions and 225 kilograms in the net competition, with a total weight of 402 kilograms.

The young Qatari weightlifter aspired, during his last attempt, to set a world record by lifting 232 kilograms, but he failed in the attempt, only to register the new Olympic record in his name and achieve the historic Olympic gold medal for the State of Qatar.
