24 August 2017 "Rebuilding is possible" if we avoid "clichés" such as "we will rebuild as it was, where it was".

This was stated by the Bishop of Rieti, Msgr.

Domenico Pompili, during the homily of the commemoration mass of the 290 victims of the earthquake a year ago.

The religious stressed that a false reconstruction "must be avoided when we proceed with the day, without knowing where to go. I wonder: are we perhaps waiting for oblivion to descend on our generation to leave our children with the task of getting by, perhaps elsewhere? he never pays. Not even in politics, because time is a decisive variable ", said the Bishop.

Monsignor Pompili then continued: "In order to recover from the tragedy of the earthquake, the commitment of everyone is necessary. To be reborn, solitary heroes will not be enough. Indeed, to be honest, a community without heroes is a heroic community. commitment, in fact, that leaves the rubble where they are; it prevents us from returning; it abandons most of us. Here it is not a question of attributing blame to someone or distributing medals to someone else, but of doing what we deserve ". The Bishop is convinced that "Amatrice will be reborn but" it is good that she even keeps her wounds, because from those future generations will learn that the city, more than its walls and streets, is made up of the ingenuity and passion of those who make it. builds ".

Several authorities present at the function: Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, the president of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti, and the mayor of Amatrice, Sergio Pierozzi.

Inauguration of the tombstone of the dead hamlets of Amatrice

It was then discovered in the early afternoon, in the presence of Bishop Pompili, a commemorative plaque for the 12 victims of the earthquake in the hamlets of Amatrice di San Lorenzo and Flaviano and Rio, among the villages that paid one of the highest taxes in terms of human lives during the earthquake one year ago. The monument, created by the "August 10" Association, is made up of the remains of the rubble of the two hamlets, and lists one by one the names of the 12 victims, 8 of whom died in the two villages, 4 disappeared under the rubble of Amatrice, the capital. It is the first monument in memory of victims of the earthquake of 24 August 2016 that is inaugurated in a hamlet. The mayor Sergio Pirozzi was absent from the celebration.

During the night the torchlight procession in memory of the 249 victims

The silence, the emotion and the memory of each of the 249 souls who vanished on the night of the earthquake that struck central Italy on 24 August a year ago. The people of Amatrice remembered them not only by reading their names but also their stories. A long appeal, which lasted almost two hours and was interrupted several times by applause and moments of deep emotion.

And from that place, the sports field a few meters from the clearing where the funeral was held on August 30 of last year, the torchlight procession then started. A long silent procession that traveled the main streets of Amatrice, skirting the red zone. In only one point the torchlight procession approached the rubble, in Piazza Augusto Sagnotti, where the three public housing blocks stood in which 19 people lost their lives on the night of the earthquake. To remind them there were as many candles, placed on what remains of those houses that came down in a moment without leaving any escape for any of the families who lived there.

At 3.36, when the procession had already reached the Don Minozzi park, 249 tolls of the bell recalled those who have not been there since that night. A monument was erected in their memory, discovered by the mayor Sergio Pirozzi, which depicts the ancient coin 'Fidelis Amatrix'. The sculptor Marino Di Prospero made it by sculpting a block of white travertine from a quarry in Acquasanta Terme. The coin 'Fidelis Amatrix' in 1486 was granted in right to the city of Amatrice by Ferdinand of Aragon for the loyalty shown to him in the fight against the Angevins.
