In 42 days, Uganda has gone from 1,500 daily cases in mid-June, to an average of between 200 and 400 Covid-19 cases per day this week.

Results which encouraged the president to partially reopen the country.

Before confinement,

" said Yoweri Museveni, "

an average of 22% of tests were positive daily but now, today, we are at an average of 8 positive people out of 100 people tested every day.

"

Motorcycle taxis are now allowed again, as are inter-district travel, shopping malls, non-food markets and outdoor sporting events.

The curfew is now between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. to prevent another outbreak of Covid-19 cases.

1.14 million Ugandans vaccinated only

Today, we are partially resuming activities,

continues the president:

public transport, travel can resume.

But if we don't respect social distancing, we will have a problem, a societal problem.

By sticking to these measures, we can avoid a third wave, and we can have time to get the vaccines, and maybe even the treatment for Covid-19.

"

To date, only around 1.14 million Ugandans have received at least a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Immunization has been slowed by the global vaccine shortage;

but new deliveries of AstraZeneca and Sinovac are expected this Saturday by the Ugandan authorities.
