On Thursday morning, the verdict came against the 16 men who were charged in the Old Town case.

Four of them receive life imprisonment, three are completely acquitted.

The other ten are also sentenced to prison for between one and fifteen years.

The men are sentenced for, among other things, aiding and abetting murder and preparation for murder.

The sentences of imprisonment for aiding and abetting murder vary between 8 years and 10 months and life.

Six were under 21

Since six of the defendants were under the age of 21 when they committed the crimes, they have received shorter sentences due to their age.

The convicts must also pay damages to the murdered man's relatives.

- The murder took place in the open street with automatic weapons and is to be regarded as a pure execution, says Robert Eneljung, councilor and one of two legal judges in the case in a press release.

Had leading position in criminal gang

On a Sunday evening in May 2020, a man in his 30s was shot nine times in the open street in the Old Town in Gothenburg.

When he reaches the hospital by ambulance, he is pronounced dead.

The man was a leader in a criminal gang in Gothenburg.

Just hours later, police were able to arrest nine people suspected of the murder.

All were previously known to the police, all aged 19 - 25 and with links to gang crime in Biskopsgården.

They could all be linked to a car that was seen leaving the murder scene.

Gang conflicts were behind it

- When it became clear who the murder victim was, the police directed suspicions against the criminal network in Biskopsgården, which for several years had a conflict with the murder victim and his relatives, chamber prosecutor Helena Treiberg Claeson told SVT before the trial.

Then the investigation grows into one of Gothenburg's largest.

Thanks to the police gaining access to the encrypted information in Encrochat, more suspects can be arrested and nine will soon be fifteen.

In addition to the murder in the Old Town, the police's preliminary investigation also concerns suspicions of preparations for the murder of three relatives of the murdered man.

In November, a man from Gambia is extradited, who becomes the sixteenth person suspected in the murder.

Several charges

At the end of March 2021, a total of 16 people will be prosecuted.

With around 800 interrogations and around 7000 pages in the preliminary investigation, one of the most tumultuous gang-related investigations is in Gothenburg.

The suspected men were charged with, among other things, murder, alternatively aiding and abetting murder, preparation for murder and stamping for murder.

They have all denied the crimes.
