July 29, 2021 Israelis over 60 will be able to receive the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine starting Sunday. This was stated by the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Nachman Ash, during a meeting with the heads of health workers. As reported by the Israeli media, Ash has specified that the third dose will be given to those over 60 who have received the second at least five months earlier. The decision comes after the substantially positive opinion of the team of experts from the ministry of health after noting a decline in the effectiveness of the vaccine among those who were immunized six months ago.

Israel is the first country in the world to take such a step. "Booster doses" are recommended - but not imposed. The Ministry of Health has asked the mutual funds to organize themselves adequately.

Worrying numbers

The pandemic figures released today remain worrying. Yesterday the infections were 2,165, or 2.35% of swabs. The seriously ill have risen to 159. The contagion R index is now 1.35%.

Meanwhile, in the country, the 'Green Pass' has returned in force, which limits entry into closed premises to those who are vaccinated, to those who have recovered from Covid and to those in possession of a negative PCR test conducted in the previous 72 hours. Other restrictions are imposed on those who go to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, in particular prohibiting the entry of visitors into the departure and arrival halls to avoid contagion.

Vaccines for "fragile" children

The Ministry of Health has also announced coronavirus vaccinations for children aged 5 to 11 who are at high risk of developing very severe forms of covid-19 due to pre-existing conditions (such as chronic lung disease, severe immunosuppression, cancer, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, sickle cell anemia, etc.). However, a lighter dose of the vaccine will be given in this age group.
