The road that crosses the village of Käl near Skuleskogen National Park has become both popular - and talked about.

The narrow gravel road has been heavily trafficked in connection with the park's increasing visitor level, which SVT previously reported on.

The road crosses a number of plots in the village, whose inhabitants have now become increasingly abandoned.

In recent years, the number of passing cars has increased significantly, and during the summer half of 2020, about 40,000 vehicles could be counted.

Mari and Mikael Berglund want a new road to be built.

- That a lot of tourists come to the area is not something we have a problem with.

We understand that people want to get out into nature, and no one should take that away from them.

But there must be a solution.

This road is very narrow and not built for the amount of traffic, says Mikael Berglund.

- It's frustrating to have it like this.

Planning is underway for a new road

A new road, drawn outside the village and with higher capacity, has been discussed for several years.

Mari and Mikael Berglund experience, however, that nothing happens, despite the fact that the cars are becoming more and more numerous.

- I understand the frustration and we have had a completely exceptional increase in the number of visitors.

We have built a turning point out by the E4 where we can redirect traffic when the entrance south is full, and we close the road for entry.

So far in July, we have redirected approximately 3,000 vehicles in this way, says Torbjörn Engberg, unit manager at the unit for protected nature, at the County Administrative Board of Västernorrland.

A design is underway, where various road alternatives are being investigated.

According to Torbjörn Engberg, new information about the future of the road may be left after the holiday.

Funding needs to be provided by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

- Now after the summer we will raise the issue again, when they are back from their holidays.

Then we have data in front and then it is about making a decision on how we should proceed, he says.
