• UK, Johnson on reopening: "If not now when?"

  • Covid-19, in Great Britain stop to quarantine for vaccinated from 19 July

July 28, 2021 Quarantine stop for vaccinated travelers arriving from the European Union and the United States and entering England and Scotland.

The turning point was announced today with the awaited formalization by the British and Scottish governments of the revocation, from 2 August, of the precautionary quarantine for all those who arrive on the island from overseas or from continental Europe (excluding France). Provided they are doubly vaccinated in the countries of origin.

In terms of reciprocity, the 2 vaccines received in the United Kingdom already guarantee exemption from quarantine in 19 EU countries, but not yet in Italy, with limited exceptions.

So far the quarantine had been canceled by the British government only for travelers residing and vaccinated in the Kingdom returning to the island. While from 16 August it will also be revoked within the country for those who, provided they have been doubly vaccinated, have had contact with infected people (remaining mandatory only for those who are infected in the first person in a test).

The Johnson government, which since July 19 has effectively eliminated all residual restrictions imposed by the lockdown of recent months, also canceling any legal constraint on the use of the mask (which is still "recommended" in public transport and in crowded indoor places), in the meantime, having won his bet for the moment despite the criticisms and fears of the opposition and part of the scientific world: the Covid infections fueled by the Delta variant have in fact returned to decline, gradually but steadily, in the last seven days; while the spread of vaccines (administered on the island to almost 90% of adults over 18 for the first dose and well over 70% with the second) seems to continue in parallel to contain theimpact on hospital admissions and especially on deaths compared to previous waves. Johnson himself warned yesterday that the pandemic is not yet over and that a dose of caution must be maintained.

And today he re-launched the appeal to get vaccinated to anyone who has not done so, while avoiding joining the accusation of being "selfish" launched yesterday by Minister Michael Gove, number 3 of his government, against all the people who - being able to do so - they refuse to receive the vaccine.
