Former drummer for metal band Slipknot, Joey Jordison, has died at the age of 46.

"We are heartbroken to have to announce that Joey Jordison, a prolific drummer, musician and artist, died peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021," CNN quoted Tuesday from a family statement that was available to the US broadcaster.

"Joey's death left us with empty hearts and indescribable sadness." He had a "gentle personality" and a "huge heart".

Information on the cause of death was initially not given.

Jordison co-founded the metal band in Iowa in 1995, which later became famous for its provocative appearances in overalls and horror masks.

In 1999 the album of the same name "Slipknot" was released.

In 2013 it became known that the drummer and the band went their separate ways.

Jordison later announced that he had a nervous system disorder.

He was also the co-founder of bands like Scar The Martyr and Sinsaenum.

Numerous colleagues from the music industry took part in the death of the musician.

Serj Tankian, singer in the band System of a Down, called Jordison a "great drummer and people" on Facebook.

The band Metallica posted a picture of Jordison with the words "RIP brother ...".

Slipknot posted a black profile picture on their Twitter account without comment.
