The United States, which won Jamaica (1-0), and Canada, defeated Costa Rica (2-0), secured their tickets to the Gold Cup semi-finals on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Matthew Hoppe headed the goal for America's difficult victory after catching a cross from Cristian Roldan in the 83rd minute.

The United States, crowned six times in the Gold Cup, will face Qatar, reigning Asian champion and guest in the competition, in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Most of the young and inexperienced US squad play in Major League Soccer (MLS), where some players can earn as little as $ 60,000 a year.

Earlier, Canada, also deprived of stars like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, also qualified.

David Junior Hoilett opened the scoring in the 18th minute by lobbing Costa Rican goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado.

Stephen Eustaquio scored his team's second goal in the 69th minute.

Canada, deprived of forwards Cyle Larin and Ayo Akinola, who were injured in their group game against the United States, reached their first semi-final since 2007.

The selection led by John Herdman will face defending champions Mexico on Thursday in Houston for a place in the final.
