FAO Director General: "Historic goal, zero hunger"

The world has a historic goal before it, to arrive at a system that registers "zero hunger". This was stated by the director general of FAO, QU Dongyu, opening the three-day work in Rome that seeks to collect ideas for the nutrition of the future, before the summit on food systems to be held in September within the framework of the General Assembly of Nations United.

"The world is not on track to meet the development goals. We need to transform our food systems to make them more resilient and inclusive," said Qu Dongyu.

"We are at a critical moment: before the pandemic we were already behind schedule for sustainable development goals. The pandemic has aggravated the situation even more," continued the FAO director general.

"We have a historic task: we must define a new, more holistic approach, transform food systems and make them more sustainable". "And we must change in order to have an organization that is up to par, with innovative, inclusive and efficient tools. Goals to achieve a better life and environment that does not neglect anyone".

Draghi: the pandemic will increase the number of malnourished people by 130 million

"Malnutrition has become the leading cause of death: the pandemic will increase the number of malnourished people by 130 million, bringing the total to 800 million. We have made a commitment that vaccines are available to all countries and we must do the same to guarantee access to food: Italy has pushed for the 'Food Coalition', now made up of 40 countries, and we need more funding from governments and development banks ", therefore" to guarantee access to credit ". Thus the Prime Minister Mario Draghi, speaking at the Pre-Summit of the Summit on Food Systems of the United Nations, at the FAO headquarters in Rome, noting how the pandemic has exacerbated the food crisis of the planet, making the issue even more urgent.

The ongoing health crisis has generated a food crisis. As with vaccines, we must act with determination to improve access to adequate food supplies. With the Matera Declaration, the G20 paved the way for the 'Food Systems Summit'. This pre-summit is an opportunity to transform the way we think, produce and consume food, on a global level ", said Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

"The Italian Presidency of the G20 has identified priorities for improving global food security. Among these, the negative impact of climate change will be at the center of the COP26 that Italy chairs with the United Kingdom. The negative impact on rainfall trends , with drought, desertification, they will increase exponentially, unless we adapt. At COP26, in Glasgow, we want to reach an ambitious agreement on climate ". So the Prime Minister.

FAO: Guterres, pandemic has highlighted inequalities

The Covid-19 pandemic has aggravated poverty in less developed areas and "underlined economic inequalities" in access to food and care. This was stated by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in a video message at the pre-FAO summit in Rome, to which he wished to be able to develop "fair and sustainable solutions" to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda of the Nations United.

The world is going through a very "critical" moment in which it appears "off track" in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. This was declared by the UN secretary general. Behind this "catastrophe", added Guterres, is the intersection between the worsening of economic inequalities and the consequences of climate change.

The Pre-Summit on Food Systems

Italy "is pleased to host the United Nations pre-Summit on Food Systems in Rome, a fundamental step to relaunch the international community's commitment to food security and sustainability through an ambitious approach and inclusive ", the Farnesina wrote in a tweet.

The Pre-Food Systems Summit kicked off today at the FAO headquarters in Rome and is a substantially preparatory moment in view of the Food Systems Summit that the UN Secretary General Guterres has convened for the Ministerial Week of the 76th General Assembly of the next September.

The appointment, explains the Farnesina in a note, confirms Italy's role as a world leader in food safety and nutrition and as a key stakeholder in the preparatory process for the Food Systems Summit, also as host country of the Roman Pole Agencies of the 'Food of the United Nations.
