The explosion was heard by several residents of the Loirs industrial zone in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes.

In the middle of the night, a violent fire broke out within the materials recycling company, Guy Dauphin Environnement (GDE).

The firefighters were warned shortly after 11:30 p.m. and when they arrived on site, the flames had already ravaged 300 m2 of various products, the fire releasing a large plume of smoke, reports France 3 Pays de Loire.

In total more than 2,000 m2 were affected, including car wrecks.

To contain the fire, 23 fire engines from ten barracks, or about fifty men, were dispatched to the site.

It took more than 4 hours to circumscribe it and protect other companies if located nearby, as well as the riparian SNCF track.

The departmental fire and rescue service indicated that no pollution had been observed.
