This is a record since January.

China reported 76 new Covid patients on Monday, most of these cases having been recorded in a province bordering Shanghai, the most populous Chinese city.

The first country to face the coronavirus at the end of 2019, the Asian giant has almost eradicated the disease on its soil since the spring of 2020 and life there has since largely returned to normal.

A success obtained thanks in particular to massive screenings, strict confinements or the compulsory placement in quarantine of all people coming from abroad.

Sporadic sources of contamination persist

39 of the 76 new patients announced by the Chinese Ministry of Health were identified in Jiangsu, a province located north of Shanghai, in eastern China.

Thousands of residents of Nanjing, the provincial capital, are currently in confinement after the recent discovery of an epidemic focus at its airport.

And since Sunday, the 9.2 million people living in this metropolis must undergo a second screening test to identify patients who may take longer than usual to show symptoms.

China follows a zero tolerance policy towards the virus and is rushing to stem new outbreaks, at a time when the more contagious Delta variant is raging in neighboring India and Burma.

A small Chinese town on the border of Burma is thus using facial recognition cameras to monitor the movements of its inhabitants and to eradicate a small focus of Covid-19.
