The president of
Tunisia, Kais Saied,
announced this Sunday night the suspension of the activity of the Parliament and the dismissal of the prime minister,
Hichem Mechichi,
after a day of protests against the country's authorities.
Saied announced these measures adopted based on article 80 of the Constitution, after an emergency meeting in the presidential palace of
Carthage,
at a time when Tunisia is facing a strong wave of
Covid-19
and a deep political crisis that paralyzes the country for months.
"The Constitution does not give me the possibility of dissolving it (Parliament), but it does not prevent me from suspending it," the president defended at the end of an urgent meeting with senior officials from the
Army
and the security forces.
Said assured to make use of article 80 of the constitution that states that "in case of imminent danger that threatens the nation, the security or the independence of the country, the President of the
Republic
can take the necessary measures due to exceptional circumstances after consulting with the Head of Government and President of Parliament ".
According to said text, the objective is to guarantee the return to a regular operation of the public power "as soon as possible" while the Constitutional Court - pending creation since 2015 - must supervise said process and make a decision regarding its extension.
