Face of the day

This is the new face of the Olympic Games desired by the resolutely young and modern International Olympic Committee (IOC).

He is played by the Japanese Yuto Horigome, who became the first Olympic champion in the history of skateboarding on Sunday at 22 thanks to his "tricks" (figures) in the Urban Sports Park Ariake in Tokyo, in the presence of the legendary Tony Hawk.

This Sunday, another sport that prides itself on being unclassifiable and on the fringes, made its great Olympic debut, surfing.

Unusual of the day

False joy for the Dutch Annemiek van Vleuten: she thought she would win the road race and even raised her arms in triumph, but Austria's Anna Kiesenhofer had already crossed the finish line for more than a minute. It took her a few seconds to realize that she was only 2nd and blamed her misadventure on the poor organization of the event. “There has been a lot of confusion and miscommunication today,” she lamented. "We did not know the gaps, we heard that there were 45 seconds at 10 km from the finish (...) while the breakaway was more than two minutes ahead," she said advanced. This is not Van Vleuten's first Olympic mishap: in 2016 in Rio, she was heading for the medal ofbut when she suffered a terrifying and serious fall on the last descent, 10 km from the finish.

For the third time in four Olympic appearances, the Polish Natalia Partyka did not go beyond the second round of the table tennis singles tournament. She lost 4-2 Sunday against the Egyptian Dina Meshref. Although she has never won an Olympic medal, Partyka, 31, is a name that matters in the world of pinging and more broadly in sport. Born without a right forearm, she has competed in the Paralympic Games five times - the first time at just 11 years old - and collected no less than six Paralympic medals, including three titles. She quickly found the level of para-table tennis competitions too low for her and decided to participate in the Olympics. Objective reached in 2008 in Beijing, then in 2012, 2016 and 2020 in Tokyo, where she still has to participate in theteam event. Only about fifteen athletes participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, since convicted of manslaughter of his partner.
