Brazil's right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, who has previously been criticized for his handling of the corona pandemic, has now received further criticism.

This week it became known that the president wants to reform Brazil's electronic electoral system, which he believes facilitates cheating.

According to the British newspaper The Guardian, there is no evidence for the claim.

Brazil is facing a presidential election next year and opinion polls show that Bolsonaro is about to lose to the left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The 66-year-old president has been accused of not taking the corona pandemic seriously and has been criticized for openly opposing restrictions and for starting vaccinations too late.

In addition, Bolsonaro is being investigated for corruption in connection with the procurement of the Indian vaccine against covid-19.

He has denied the allegations.

Supreme Court threatens

On Saturday, Brazilians once again took to the streets around the country to protest against the president and, among other things, demand higher compensation for those financially affected by the pandemic.

"It is very important that everyone who feels oppressed by this government takes to the streets, because we need to fight for democracy," 65-year-old Laise de Oliveira told the AFP news agency.

Critics want Bolsonaro to stand trial, but Claudio Couto, a political scientist at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, tells Al Jazeera that Bolsonaro is unlikely to be convicted.

- It is necessary to bring two thirds of the parliament and Bolsonaro today has the support of at least 40 percent, Couto says.

Want to get the economy started

More than 500,000 people are estimated to have died as a result of covid-19 in the country.

At the same time, about 20 percent of the population is fully vaccinated and about 45 percent have received at least one syringe.

Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said last week that the best way to stop the virus from progressing is to vaccinate more people, but that it must also get the economy moving.

- We have enough hospital beds and we will have to live with this pandemic until we can control it.
