It was with great sorrow that François Commeinhes, mayor of the city of Sète (Hérault), announced the news to its inhabitants.

The feast of Saint-Louis which was to take place from August 19 to 24 will not take place.

For the second year in a row, the coronavirus pandemic got the better of this huge traditional festival that brought together tens of thousands of people.

The mayor justified this decision in the daily

Midi Libre

by referring to the spectacular increase in incidence rates. “They are blazing. We are at 210 on Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée, against 13.4 on June 28. But the most worrying is in the 16-30 age group, with a rate of 738 ”, explains the mayor, also a doctor by profession.

This total cancellation while some were simply hoping for a reduction in size may be surprising, but François Commeinhes explains it: “A Saint-Louis without a party in the streets, without bars on the quayside, it would not be a Saint-Louis.

He also took the opportunity to remind all Sétois that the only way to try to counter the pandemic is to get vaccinated, in addition to continuing to apply barrier gestures.

Thus, the Sétois will be able to reconnect with their traditions.
