The high mountain gendarmerie platoon (PGHM) of Chamonix was unable to revive an Italian mountaineer on Thursday afternoon in the Mont-Blanc massif.

The 66-year-old man, who stalled during the descent from a summit of the famous massif, on the Franco-Italian border, was in a roped party of three Italian climbers.

They were making a series of abseils on the rope at the level of the Dent du Géant (4,013 m above sea level) when, around 4.30 p.m., the victim, from Cortenova (Lombardy), fell to around 3,850 m.

The Italian emergency services, immediately warned but occupied, requested the intervention of the PGHM, confirming information from the

.

As with any serious accident in the mountains, an investigation has been opened into the circumstances and causes of the accident, not yet determined at this stage.

The two companions of the victim, in shock, were heard on Thursday.

A witness will also be on Friday.
