A total of 77 people were killed, 69 on Utøya where the majority were children and eight people in the explosion in Oslo.

In Rådhusparken in Jönköping, a memorial event with live music, the opportunity to light candles and put roses on the stage to honor the victims has been arranged during the afternoon and evening.

- It is important to have this every year so that people do not forget what happened, says Junie Ek Alexandersson, SSU Jönköping.

Seized by the task force

Utøya is located northwest of Oslo and has been the place of the Norwegian Social Democrats for political youth camps since the 1950s.

That is where right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik struck, a few hours after his bomb detonated outside the government office.

He introduced himself as a police officer when he arrived on the island and stated that he came there for a check after the bombing in Oslo.

Breivik murdered 69 people and injured many more on Utøya before he was arrested by task forces.

Anders Breivik was convicted

Many were shot dead with automatic weapons, some young people tried to escape into the water to be rescued by boats, despite Breivik shooting at them in the water.

The following year, Breivik was sentenced to 21 years in prison, the Norwegian team's most severe punishment.

The sentence can be extended by five years at a time as long as Breivik poses a danger to society
