Israel joins the African Union as an observer member

Israel joined the African Union as an observer member, according to a statement issued by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

The statement said that Israel's ambassador in Addis Ababa, Adamsu Alali, presented his credentials to the African Union as an observer for the first time since 2002.

The statement added that Israel has relations with 46 countries in Africa, within which cooperation in many areas of development and trade takes place.

The statement stated that once the relationship with the African Union is established, the two parties will be able to cooperate in the areas of combating Corona and preventing the spread of extremist terrorism throughout the continent.

"This will help us to strengthen our activities towards the continent and towards the member states of the Union," the statement quoted Foreign Minister Yair Lapid as saying.
