In addition to the pandemic and the violence of firearms in New York, there is another emergency: that of the impressive and growing number of road deaths.

2021 is already considered the black year for the number of deaths on the asphalt: in just six months 124 people were killed, of these 64 pedestrians, 52 motorists and 8 cyclists.

This was revealed by data from the Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets association. Data that goes against the trend of the 'Vision Zero' program, created by Mayor Bill De Blasio in 2014 with the aim of drastically reducing the number of road victims. Over 1,700 people have been killed by motorists since de Blasio became mayor in 2014. The death toll dropped between 2016 and 2018, but rose again in 2019 and then surged in the year of the pandemic.
