Illumination of emblematic buildings, light shows, artistic and technical works ... The city of

Madrid

is preparing for the celebration of its

Festival of Lights

next October 2021. The objective of the initiative is that the city, and above all its

heritage elements

(emblematic buildings, monuments), are illuminated for several days with different artistic creations to enhance their essentially historical value.

To ensure citizens

great festivals of light

in their streets throughout the year, the

delegation of Culture, Tourism and Sports

, led by councilor Andrea Levy, intends to join the

LUCI

(

Lighting Urban Community International

) organization. Although at the moment it is a project to be defined, the Municipal Plenary could give the go-ahead to it this Wednesday morning.

As explained by the Culture delegation to this newspaper, the proposal aims to "make people go down the street and enjoy an

explosion of lights

."

He has also announced that, regardless of the association decision by the Plenary, "the Festival of Lights scheduled for October will have its celebration, although it would be necessary to join LUCI to make it as spectacular as possible

without involving excessive municipal spending

.

"

LUCI ASSOCIATION

LUCI is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the use of lighting as a

tool for sustainable urban development

, which in turn increases the attractiveness of cities and improves the quality of life of its inhabitants. It operates mainly in the area of

public lighting

: monuments, buildings, streets and other urban landscapes; as well as creative lighting events for special occasions.

Its association with Madrid will allow proposals from other member cities to reach the Spanish capital and vice versa. That is why the Culture delegation continues to analyze possible expenses before launching a final project budget. The initiative will mean a

tourist bonus for the city of Madrid

and it will be a pioneering proposal.

Its

final presentation

with the list of buildings and streets that will be part of illuminated Madrid will be during the month of

September 2021

. However, as clarified from the delegation led by Levy: "We do not intend to change the lighting of Madrid, but to establish large festivals of lights in the city and make it known to the rest of the world." In addition, they assure this newspaper that it will be "

an ambitious initiative

" and will differ from the sporadic lighting dependent on seasons of the year such as Christmas. Although the assembly will have specific dates, it will be prolonged in time in different days of the calendar and with a

specific periodicity

.

In addition to the association with LUCI, the City Council will also have

sponsors

to make the "most impressive light festivals in the world" and thus "promote the city abroad," they explain in the Culture delegation.

The next light festivals will be held

outdoors

, so sanitary measures can be maintained against Covid-19 and make this experience a

safe event

for locals and visitors who want to come and enjoy it.
