Marius Weiß (SPD), the chairman of the committee of inquiry into the attack in Hanau, tries to make an appointment with the attorney general.

The committee had instructed him to do so, the Social Democratic MP reported on Wednesday in an interview with the FAZ

The Hessian state parliament installed the body with a large majority against the votes of the AfD to clarify whether the racially motivated murders of February 19, 2020 are related to omissions by the authorities.

In the public debate, for example, it is complained that the assassin had a gun license that was not allowed to be issued.

The police station's emergency call system did not work properly on the night of the murder.

The public prosecutor does not want to start an investigation "due to a lack of causality", but found that the deficiencies were known before the night of the murder.

Investigate "night-time behavior" by the police

The committee is also interested in organizational fault below the criminal threshold, explained Weiß.

This also includes, for example, the “night crime behavior” of the police, i.e. how they deal with the relatives of the victims.

In the intended "discussion" with a representative of the Attorney General, Weiß hopes to find out how long his investigations were still going on. It is clear in Wiesbaden that the majority of the files will not be released by then. At the same time, however, he hoped that an unproblematic part of the material could be sent to the state parliament in advance. This is how they proceeded in the Lübcke murder case. According to the information provided by the chairman, the Hanau Committee resolved a total of four requests for evidence in its second closed meeting. The opposition submitted three, and the governing coalition submitted a larger one, says Weiß. The deviations are marginal. The MPs wanted to inspect files from the police in the Main-Kinzig district and the Southeast Hesse Presidium. They are also interested in the relevant material from the State Office of Criminal Investigation and the Hessian Office for the Protection of the Constitution. These authorities will also be contacted at the national level.

Meet with representatives of the bereaved

Weiß announced that he also wanted to meet the representatives of the bereaved in Hanau.

He will ask for trust and explain the work of the committee.

For example, you have to make it clear to the bereaved that they have many legitimate questions.

But the committee would invite them as witnesses to answer questions.

The next meeting of the body will take place in early September.

Then the members of the state parliament want to discuss the order in which the requests for evidence will be treated.

The question of how much time the body needs to fulfill its mandate depends, according to the Social Democrats, on how often it can meet.

Because of the Lübcke committee of inquiry and the study commission on traffic, the few suitable meeting rooms in the state parliament are already frequently occupied. It depends on finding enough gaps. The working atmosphere is very constructive, stated Weiß. In the past few years he had not seen a committee of inquiry in which the climate was so good.
