An Iranian police officer was shot dead in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, which is witnessing protests against the backdrop of water scarcity, killing at least one person.

Shortly after midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Iranian news agency (IRNA) reported the killing of an officer in the security forces following what the agency described as "riots" on Tuesday evening in the coastal city of Bandar Mahshahr in Khuzestan.

"Following the riots that took place on Tuesday evening in the town of Taleghani, the cadres of the relief unit of the Internal Security Forces were surprised and exposed to fire from the roof of a building, and a member of the relief unit was killed in the city, and another member was wounded in the leg," local official Faridoun Bandari said. .

Local media indicated that the slain officer had the rank of "second lieutenant."
