According to media reports, three men have been arrested in Norway and large quantities of weapons have been confiscated.
As the public service broadcaster NRK reported on Tuesday with reference to the police and the secret service PST, the investigators assume in the case that the matter has connections to the right-wing extremist milieu.
First, the newspapers Romerikes Blad and Avisa Nordland reported on the police operation that had been going on for some time.
The arrests took place in different places in the country. In the apartment of a man from the city of Bodø, the police found six machine guns, ten rifles, five pistols and thousands of rounds of live ammunition. They are said to be older weapons, including some from wartime. The man is now in custody for alleged violations of gun laws, as are the other two arrested, one from Lillestrøm and another from Hamar. Weapons were also found among them, said a police spokesman on the radio.
What the weapons were supposed to be used for is just as unclear as the exact time of the arrests. The police suspect that there are links to a network of people who have bought and sold illegal weapons. A connection to Thursday's tenth anniversary of the attacks by right-wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik in Oslo's government district and on the island of Utøya with a total of 77 fatalities was not made in the reports.
