Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu

yesterday sent a

letter to President Pedro Sánchez

so that

the mask will once again be mandatory in Spain at all times

. A

formal letter

in which he asks him to

modify at the last second

the

decree

that will be debated in Congress tomorrow and that, after an announcement by the president, established the freedom to use the mask in open spaces. Urkullu now demands that it be an

"obligation" again

and notes that Sánchez's decision has had

"effects" on the resurgence of infections

.

Urkullu raises the pressure on Sánchez in the fifth wave of Covid-19 with an exponential increase in infections that for the sixth day exceed 1,000 cases. And on the eve of Congress voting on the decree that made the use of the mask more flexible, Urkullu has written to Sánchez

to rectify it

with a modification of that rule. As explained by the spokesman for the Basque Government Bingen Zupiria, Urkullu's claim was made in writing, without conversation between the two leaders and without a response from La Moncloa so far.

But, in addition to demanding the mandatory use of the mask, the lehendakari also asks the president

to urgently change the law

so that

each autonomous community

can decree restrictions on mobility and concentration in groups of people. These measures, although not expressly mentioned, would include curfews. This regulatory change

would exempt the communities from previously obtaining the approval of the

regional

courts

of justice.

Urkullu's "concern" for the evolution of infections contrasts with the evolution of the vaccination process.

The Basque Government

will open appointments tomorrow to vaccinate the 87,000 adolescents between 12 and 15 years old

.

Their vaccination will take place in the coming weeks and it is intended to take advantage of the gaps generated in the vaccination schedules for July and August.

According to the Health Minister Gotzone Sagardui there are up to 40,000 appointments available for young people between 16 and 29 years old that have not been closed.

One of the reasons given by Sagardui is the high rate of infections in this age group and that it delays the vaccination of those who are infected in this wave by 6 months.
