Six Polish swimmers who were to participate in the Olympics-2020 had to leave Japan before the start of the competition following an administrative error by the Polish Swimming Federation (PZP).

Returning to Poland on Sunday, the swimmers threatened to take legal action and called on the PZP president to resign.

"I want to express my deepest regret and sadness about the situation," PZP President Pawel Slominski, who admitted the mistake, said in a statement.

Alicja Tchorz, one of six swimmers who had to return to Poland, denounced the PZP's "incompetence" on social media, saying the Federation "misunderstood the rules".

"Imagine sacrificing five years of your life and your sacrifice yields a gigantic failure," complained Tchorz, who participated in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

The Tokyo Games start on Friday, and the swimming events on Saturday.
