It is mainly from Polish puppy factories that dogs are smuggled into the country, but also from Romania and Bulgaria, according to Stefan Granath, who is deputy head of unit at the Swedish Customs.

In order for it to be legal to buy a dog from other countries, a rabies vaccination is required, and this is often what is missing for dogs that come from smuggling factories.

This in turn leads to a risk of getting a serious illness in the country.

Another consequence of the growing industry is that more and more dogs are exposed to disgusting conditions, according to the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
