A

New York police officer

kept a stabbing victim alive using an

empty potato chip bag

and duct tape.

New York Police Officer

Ronald Kennedy

has been praised by police chiefs for his swift action after placing the makeshift tourniquet over the man's wound.

As reported by

Sky News

, the extraordinary action was captured by the agent's body camera after the officer responded to a stabbing reported

in Harlem on July 7

.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, had been stabbed in the torso, according to the Police department, "Go get me a bag of potato chips right now," Agent

Kennedy

is heard saying

to a passerby on the recording of the body camera.

The victim is then heard saying to the agent:

"He caught me in the lung

.

"

"I know, I know," Kennedy says.

"Just relax".

The passerby then brings the officer an unopened bag of Lays crisps, which Kennedy hastily opens and empties the bag on the ground.

Then he says to the passerby:

"Come in and bring me the tape

.

"

He then asks two other people to help him lay the victim on the ground before using the duct tape to secure the crushed bag of potato chips to the man's bloody chest.

Agent Kennedy then

reassures the victim

: "We have you. We have you. Stay with me."

When emergency services arrive, Kennedy tells them, "I tried.

It's the best I could do with what I got

."

Police said in a statement that the doctor who treated the victim attributed his survival to Kennedy's actions.
