Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday.

He will participate in particular in the ceremonies for the anniversary of the intervention of the Turkish army in Cyprus, July 20, 1974. This invasion, in reaction to the plan of the regime of the colonels in Athens to annex the island, had ratified its partition between the Republic of Cyprus, now a member of the European Union, and Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey.

President Erdogan is now openly pleading for a "two-state solution".

His visit will therefore be closely followed by the European Union.

From 2017, after the failure of talks under the auspices of the UN for a reunification of Cyprus, we felt Recep Tayyip Erdogan lean more and more clearly in favor of a definitive partition of the island.

But it was

the election at the head of North Cyprus

in October 2020 of Ersin Tatar - a supporter of this two-state "solution", unlike his predecessor - that prompted the Turkish president to openly defend this idea, and even to present it as the only possible option.

The EU expects a "

positive signal

"

These Monday and Tuesday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan should therefore reiterate his call for the opening of negotiations on the basis of two independent states, knowing that the United Nations and the European Union are firmly opposed to it.

Never

", hammered Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier this month, saying she expected a "

positive signal

" from the Turkish Head of State during her visit.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his part, promised to announce "

good news

 ".

Either way, his message will be addressed at least as much to the Turkish Cypriots and the EU as to the electorate of the

Turkish president

struggling in the polls and always ready to strike the nationalist chord.
