The blast furnace quickly became very unprofitable and even though the threat of closure triggered strong protests, the blast furnace was closed in 1981 and is now demolished.

The surrounding area has been partially cleared, but there are concrete foundations, scrap metal and walls left from demolished buildings.

On the remains of the modern Spännarhyttan, you can legally paint graffiti and the wall is usually called "Sweden's most expensive graffiti wall".
