The World Health Organization's (WHO) Director-General Ghebreyesus said that Chinese laboratories should be included in the second phase of the investigation into the origin of the coronavirus.

According to The Guardian, WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus said in a closed-door briefing to member states that 'a phase 2 investigation into the origins of COVID-19 should include additional studies in China and laboratory audits'.

We also requested additional research on the animal market in Wuhan, China, where COVID-19 was first reported in December 2019.

The Wuhan laboratory audit and animal market study were included in the five points proposed by Secretary-General Ghebreyesus for the second phase of the investigation.

Secretary-General Tedros said he expects China to support the next step in the scientific process by transparently sharing data.

He also stressed that elucidating the origin of COVID-19 is essential to prevent future outbreaks of infectious diseases.

The WHO has been criticized for insufficient investigation into the origin of COVID-19.
