Two men with links to a far-right militia are said to have planned an attack on the party headquarters of the US Democrats in the state of California.

The US Department of Justice said on Friday that up to 50 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition and five pipe bombs were found in one of the men.

The men, 45 and 37 years old, reportedly began planning an attack after incumbent Donald Trump was defeated in the November 3 presidential election.

The plans were then pushed forward again after the Capitol was stormed on January 6th.

In one message, one of the men wrote to the other: "I really want to blow up a Democratic building."

In another message he wrote: “After the 20th we will go to war.” According to the indictment, this meant January 20th, when the new President Joe Biden moved into the White House.

In their messages, the men expressed the hope of "starting a revolution" with an attack on the Democratic party headquarters in the California capital Sacramento.

"We need 500 pissed off patriots who want America back."

According to the Justice Department, the men are supporters of the extremist movement Three Percenters, in which Trump enjoys great sympathy.

The militia is anti-government and advocates the right to own weapons.

According to the anti-racism group Anti-Defamation League, the Three Percenters also see left-wing groups, Muslims and immigrants as enemies.

Supporters of the group were also involved in the storming of the Capitol.

The two men accused face long prison sentences if convicted.

They are charged, among other things, with a conspiracy to destroy a building, illegally possessing explosives and illegally possessing machine guns, as well as destroying evidence.
