    The country towards herd immunity

July 16, 2021 The total lifting of anti-covid restrictions in the UK is a "dangerous and immoral" choice for the whole world. This was claimed by 1,200 scientists, who harshly attacked British Prime Minister Boris Johnson a few days after the fateful 'free all' on 19 July. The Cnbc reports.

Government specialists and consultants from different countries gathered in a virtual meeting endorsed a letter from the Lancet medical journal in which the British government's plans (including stopping the mandatory use of masks and social distancing) were described as "dangerous and premature ".

Christina Pagel, director of the clinical operations research unit at University College London, warned that "due to our position as a global travel hub, any variant that becomes dominant in the UK is likely to spread to the rest of the world." Michael Baker, professor of public health and member of the advisory group of the New Zealand ministry of health, said he was "amazed" by the British government's plans to return to a "herd immunity approach".

Approach defined as "completely unacceptable", because this strategy has "failed miserably around the world", he said. According to the US virologist William Haseltine, the world has "always looked to the United Kingdom for important and sensible policies", while "unfortunately this was not the case for the Covid-19 pandemic". And he called the so-called herd immunity strategies "homicide".

Like Jose Martin-Moreno, professor of public health at the University of Valencia: "We don't understand why this is happening despite the knowledge the UK has," he said, fearing that other countries might start "imitating" British policies. "If we remove the tools that contain the transmission, it will go like this", he added.
