According to anonymous diplomatic sources, Guterres has announced the appointment to the Security Council's 15 member states, and a formal nomination is expected to be announced shortly.

TT has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a comment.

Middle East specialist Hans Grundberg has served as the EU's ambassador to Yemen since 2019 and will replace Britain's Martin Griffiths, who in May was appointed UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

In June, Griffiths announced to the UN Security Council that his efforts to end years of war in Yemen had failed.

He expressed "deep regret" for not making more progress during his three years in the post.

The conflict in Yemen flared up in 2014 when Huthi rebels attacked the capital Sanaa, leading to a Saudi military intervention to support the government the following year.

The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced 3.3 million people to flee.

The famine is great and at least 80 percent of Yemen's population is forced to rely on aid in what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
