From 9 August, young people born in 2005 and earlier can also be vaccinated against covid-19.

This is announced by the Swedish Public Health Agency in a press release.

“The vaccinations are planned to be able to start from the second week in August onwards, based on the respective region's conditions.

This also applies to children up to the age of 12 with a special risk of suffering from severe covid-19 ", the authority writes.

Recommended start

The start date is a recommendation from the Swedish Public Health Agency, which reckons that the regions have then come so far that everyone who is 18 years and older has been offered a vaccine within phase 4.

The vaccine that will be offered is Pfizer / BioNTech's mRNA vaccine, which is approved for up to 12 years.

The purpose is above all to protect the young people themselves against disease, but also to further reduce the spread of infection in society, according to the authority.

The majority of adults were vaccinated

Since the start on 27 December 2020 and until 14 July, 5,747,869 people in Sweden have received at least one dose of vaccine against covid-19.

Of these, 3,682,574 also received a second dose.

This means that over 70 percent of everyone aged 18 and older in Sweden has received at least one dose of vaccine, and 45 percent are vaccinated with two doses.

"We have come a long way with vaccination coverage in Sweden and that means a lot to reduce the spread of infection and to be able to keep it at a low level," says Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency in a press release.

By mid-June, 51 percent of all 18-year-olds and older had received at least one dose of covid-19 vaccine, and more than a quarter had been vaccinated with two doses.
