Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday due to a persistent hiccup attack for more than ten days, his communications service announced.

Under observation for 24 to 48 hours

"Following the guidance of his medical team, he was admitted to the Armed Forces hospital to carry out examinations to identify the causes of the hiccups," the presidency explained in a statement.

"He is well, he is in a good mood" and "will remain under observation for 24 to 48 hours, not necessarily in the hospital," said the presidency.

"I have hiccups 24 hours a day"

Jair Bolsonaro, 66, had mentioned these hiccups for more than a week, after an operation for a dental implant.

“I have had the hiccups for five days.

It has happened to me before, it may be because of the drugs I take, I have hiccups 24 hours a day, ”he revealed last Thursday during his weekly direct on Facebook.

Since taking office in 2019, Jair Bolsonaro has undergone several operations on his abdomen due to the aftermath of the stabbing attack he suffered in September 2018, during the election campaign.

In July 2020, he had been diagnosed with Covid-19, but had only experienced mild symptoms and had not had to be hospitalized.
